From our homesteads and homesites at Saddlehorn in Bigfork, Montana, we have a front row view to the arrival of winter in Big Sky Country. We’re surrounded by various ranges of the Rocky Mountains, including the Swan Mountains, Whitefish Range and Cabinet Mountains, which means winter is right at home among our northwest Montana landscapes.
Bigfork – known as Montana’s Christmas Village – is especially joyous this time of year. Local residents (known as the Bigfork elves) deck the halls of downtown, helping transform it into a winter wonderland, with the Parade of Lights being a much-loved annual event. You can also expect to find Santa – and his reindeer – making an appearance.
When it comes to winter recreation, this area of Montana has an abundant supply. From Bigfork, you can access two downhill ski areas – Blacktail Mountain Ski Area in Lakeside and Whitefish Mountain Resort in Whitefish – as well as several trails for cross-country skiing. Beyond skiing, Bigfork is also within easy reach of Glacier National Park. Open year-round, Glacier National Park is a popular summer destination and winter is its quiet season. During the winter season, the park is best visited and explored on cross-country skis and snowshoes. Plus, ranger-led snowshoe walks are available on weekends.
From our community at Saddlehorn, it’s also easy to experience some of the area’s best dining. In Bigfork, put these places on your winter dining list: Montana Bonfire, Quarter Circle at Flathead Lake Lodge, Echo Lake Cafe, Flathead Lake Brewing Company, Saketome and Pocketstone Cafe.
There are also several nearby communities that have their own winter-loving activities and events. Check out Frosty the Brewfest in Kalispell, Whitefish Winter Carnival in Whitefish and Cabin Fever Days in Martin City.
