There’s no place on earth quite like Montana. Saddlehorn is located in northwest Montana, just outside the quaint community of Bigfork, and a stone’s throw away from some of the most iconic outdoor spaces in the country, including Flathead Lake, the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex and Glacier National Park.

If you’re ready to settle down in Montana, here are five things you should know.

1. Montana has four distinct seasons.

When you live in Big Sky Country, you’ll quickly notice – and likely welcome – the four distinct seasons. Each brings its own climate, as well as its own set of experiences and offerings. Around here, winter was made for downhill skiing and snowboarding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, soaking up the season and supporting small businesses. Spring brings warmers temperatures, sunny days, blue skies, bird migrations, wildflowers and longer daylight hours. Summer, which is perhaps Montana’s most popular time of year, brings lots of daylight, warm temperatures, late afternoon rainstorms, beautiful landscapes, sailing/boating on Flathead Lake and access to plentiful public lands. And finally, fall is best described as the local favorite. It has stunning fall colors, comfortable temperatures and more room to breathe.

2. Agriculture is the largest industry, followed by tourism.

Farming and ranching have long been the biggest industry in Montana, with multigenerational operations putting food on the table for many people. On the east side of the Rocky Mountains, you’ll find large cattle and farming operations. Meanwhile, closer to home in Montana’s Flathead Valley, you’ll still see many ag operations, from orchards to cattle and farming to lavender and flower farms. The second-largest industry in Montana is travel and tourism, with the Big Sky state welcoming visitors from around the world to experience life here, from driving the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park to kayaking on Flathead Lake and seeing the geothermal features of Yellowstone National Park.

3. While some parts may be rural, it’s easier than you think to fly in/out of.

Montana is the fourth-largest state in the U.S. and is home to just over 1 million residents, which means there is plenty of room to roam and space to breathe. But that doesn’t mean it’s not easy to get here. If you live in Saddlehorn, you are less than 40 minutes to Glacier Park International Airport in Kalispell, which has flights to several airports throughout the country.

4. Small businesses thrive here.

Here in Montana, a large majority of businesses are small and locally owned, to the tune of over 123,000 small businesses. Montana is known for being independent, and entrepreneurs tend to thrive here. Here in Bigfork and the surrounding area, it’s easy to shop small and shop local.

5. Residents are nice.

Chances are, when you meet a local, they’re going to be really nice and friendly and will likely ask you questions, not because they’re nosey but because they want to get to know you. When you live in Bigfork, be ready to rub elbows with the locals. Before you know it, you’ll have a great group of friends right here in Montana.
